Del Mar, CA Local Area Information

Del Mar is an upscale, beach city in San Diego about 20 miles from Downtown. The Del Mar Racetrack is a popular American Thoroughbred horse racing track at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in this lovely seaside city. Operated by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, it is known for the slogan: "Where The Turf Meets The Surf" and where many fans come to socialize, bet on their favorite horses or jockeys, and enjoy the stunning views and ocean breeze during this summer long event. It was built by a partnership including Bing Crosby, the actor Pat O'Brien, Jimmy Durante, Charles S. Howard and Oliver Hardy.

The San Diego County Fair is hosted on the Del Mar Fairgrounds every summer as well; usually a month before the Racetrack season begins.

Del Mar is also one of few locations in which the Torrey Pine tree grows. The Torrey Pine is the rarest pine in the United States and only two populations of this endangered species exist.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a coastal state park located in the community of La Jolla, San Diego, which is just south of Del Mar. Although it is located within San Diego city limits, it remains one of the wildest stretches of land (8 km) on the Southern California coast. It is bordered immediately on the south by Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course-where some of the most famous golf tournaments are held and on the north by the city of Del Mar.

The reserve consists of a plateau with cliffs that overlook Torrey Pines State Beach, and a lagoon that is vital to migrating seabirds. Many different kinds of wildlife and flora are found within the reserve.
